Choosing the Right Wood & Finish

A Planning Guide for Your Custom March Legend® Piece

Understanding Our Wood Species

Painted, Stained, or Two-Tone

Distressing & Character

Choosing the Right Wood

Every piece we build begins with solid American hardwood. The species you choose shapes the character of your furniture — from grain pattern to durability to how it ages over time.

• Eastern White Pine offers warmth and rustic charm, ideal for relaxed farmhouse finishes.

• Maple provides a smooth, refined surface with excellent durability and a clean grain.

• Oak showcases a strong, defined grain pattern — perfect for stained heirloom pieces.

• Cherry deepens beautifully with age, developing a rich, timeless tone.

For many of our painted pieces, we use a carefully selected poplar and maple blend. Poplar provides stability and takes paint beautifully, while maple adds strength and structure. This combination creates a smooth, durable foundation beneath hand-applied finishes.

We choose each species intentionally — balancing beauty, strength, and longevity.

Selecting Your Finish

Your finish choice determines how your piece feels in your home — from refined and understated to rich and dramatic.

• Painted Finishes create a soft cottage or modern farmhouse look and can be color-matched to trusted brands such as Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore.

Our painted finishes are layered by hand for depth, not flat coverage.

• For added character, we also offer a color-over-color finish, where one tone is applied beneath another and gently revealed through selective distressing. This technique creates subtle contrast and lived-in depth.
Examples include Ivory over Aquamarine or Midnight over Picket Fence, though combinations can be customized to suit your space.

•Stained Finishes highlight the natural grain and texture of hardwood, bringing warmth and organic richness to the piece.

• Two-Tone Finishes — often a stained top with a painted base — offer contrast while maintaining balance and cohesion within your room.

Each finish is applied by hand and sealed with an eco-friendly protective top coat designed for daily living.

Defining the Level of Distress

Every March Legend® piece can be customized with your preferred level of character.

• No Distress offers a clean, refined surface.

• Light Distress adds subtle softening along edges.

• Medium Distress introduces visible wear for authentic farmhouse charm.

• Heavy Distress creates a time-worn heirloom aesthetic.

Distressing is always intentional — never artificial or overdone. Our goal is natural character, not decoration.
